Archery TASTER SESSIONS AND Beginners' Courses

Ascham have been helping new archers on their journey since 1942!

Archery is a low impact sport with numerous physical and mental benefits and is highly accessible to all.

We offer taster sessions for adults and children wanting to have an introduction to archery, and full courses for people wishing to continue to learn.

We now have no space available on our taster session or full course until October 2026. Please get in touch (email, whatsapp or text) if you'd like to enquire about a taster session or full course during our winter season, which we run on Sunday mornings 11- 1pm (weather permitting).

TASTER SESSION

The two hour session is a great introduction to the sport of archery.   We teach the basics of shooting safely, and you'll have the opportunity to shoot plenty of arrows during the session.

At this session, you'll receive tuition in recurve target archery as part of a small group, and receive individual coaching and guidance from our qualified coaches.

We provide all the archery equipment you'll need as well as light refreshments.

BEGINNERS' Course

Our beginners' course involves six two hour sessions. including the first taster session.. We know that people have other commitments, so we are flexible and don't insist on attendance at consecutive sessions, although we do encourage completion within a 2 or 3 month period so that learning can be applied and embedded through practice.

On this course, you'll receive instruction in very small groups, individual coaching and guidance from our qualified coaches as you develop your archery skills.  You'll also learn about setting the range up, preparing your bow and you'll have the opportunity to try out barebow and longbow styles as well as recurve at a number of distances.

Upon completion of your beginners' course, you're encouraged to apply for membership to join the club where you can enjoy recreational shooting,  enter tournaments and shoot as a guest at other clubs (where allowed).

When new members are ready to buy their own equipment, we can provide guidance on what to go for and where to get it.

Weather disclaimer: outdoor archery is weather dependent, and seeing as we are in the UK, this means we are sometimes unable to deliver a planned taster session or beginners' course session due to conditions. When this happens, we will let you know as quickly as we can and arrange with you to come along to another session.

What to bring

We provide all equipment for the taster session and full course -  bows, arrows, and accessories. You only need to be dressed correctly, and bring your enthusiasm to learn!

What to wear

You'll need to wear comfortable, reasonably close-fitting clothing and shoes that fully cover your feet (no sandals). Safety rules mean that we'll ask you to tie long hair back, secure any head covering such as a hijab, avoid wearing dangly earrings and other loose jewellery, and remove any piercings on your face and front of your body.
